Science and Innovation Hub: With a population of 205,000 inhabitants, Trieste is recognised as the ‘City of Science’, boasting the highest density of researchers in Europe. Its universities and research centres, including ICTP, ICGEB, SISSA and Area Science Park, are leaders in research production. The city hosted the ESOF 2020 forum, strengthening its international network and promoting start-ups in the bio-high-tech sector, aligning with the vision of a smart and sustainable economy.
Social Inclusion and Wellbeing: Trieste offers a wide range of welfare services, integrating social and health services, and strives for social inclusion through formal and non-formal education. The city supports a large segment of the active elderly population, reflecting its focus on citizens’ well-being and participation in cultural and social life.
Learning Infrastructure: Education in Trieste ranges from formal to non-formal education, with an integrated municipal education system, local universities and internationally renowned research centres. The city also boasts a 100-year tradition of institutions dedicated to lifelong learning, such as the Popular University, the University of the Third Age and the University of the Free Age, enriching the educational offer for all ages.
Developments of the Learning City: The ‘Trieste City of Knowledge Network’, through a memorandum of understanding with universities and research institutions, promotes joint programmes to attract students and researchers and disseminate scientific knowledge. Initiatives such as the “Pact for Reading” and the NEXT science festival demonstrate Trieste’s commitment to promoting lifelong learning and the dissemination of knowledge at the community level.
