In a significant commitment to education and historical remembrance, the Regional Council of Friuli Venezia Giulia approved resolution no. 157 of 2 February 2024, by which it adopted and implemented the operational definition of anti-Semitism drawn up by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA).
This initiative represents an important step in the fight against anti-Semitism, promoting education and awareness as key tools to combat this phenomenon.
The adopted definition, the result of an intergovernmental agreement to which Italy adheres, aims to strengthen, advance and promote Holocaust education, remembrance and research globally by clearly delineating the manifestations of anti-Semitism. This includes, inter alia, incitement to hatred against Jews, conspiracy theories and Holocaust denial.
The approval of the resolution is part of the broader context of the Start Learning Cities Up project, an initiative promoted by the Region to develop international platforms for lifelong learning and to foster cultural and educational exchange. Particular attention is given to the development of educational initiatives that counter anti-Semitism and promote historical memory, with the aim of building a more inclusive and aware society.
The Regional Council’s decision to adopt and promote the IHRA’s operational definition of anti-Semitism testifies to the Regional Administration’s commitment to combating anti-Semitism and supporting Jewish life. This resolution not only reaffirms the importance of historical memory and education as instruments of prevention, but also sets a model for other local institutions in adopting similar measures.
